Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the "use of all appropriate technology and management practices to bring about pest prevention and suppression in a cost-effective, environmentally sound manner." IPM emphasizes non-chemical control techniques over chemical control but not the total elimination of pesticides.

The main strategy of IPM is to use a combination of several pest control methods including biological, cultural and chemical, as long as it is necessary to provide control and ensure favorable economic and environmental results. IPM is expected to:

  • Minimize harm to human health and the environment
  • Reduce the need for pesticides
  • Reduce pest resistance
  • Minimize pesticide waste
Implementing IPM
  1. Pest Identification:
It is important to know which pest is in your home so you will be able to properly take preventative measures as well as corrective actions. Use "BUG-U" to help you identify the pest.
  2. Early Detection:
Routinely monitor your home for potential infestations. This might mean a substantial savings of time and money as well as the frustration of an unwanted visitor. It is easier to deal with a few problem bugs than a whole colony or nest settling in. Try to determine the source or potential source of the infestation.
  3. Short Term Corrective Action:
The use of pesticides may be warranted to circumvent a major infestation. Knowing what pest is present will help you select the appropriate pesticide. Be sure to read all Precautionary Statements and Directions for use. For pesticides, always "KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN". Please visit the Pesticide Safety section for more information.
  4. Long Term Corrective Action:
Ongoing control actions help reduce pests by eliminating their food sources, nesting areas and access. This is the heart of IPM program and an essential to its success. Visit the "Tips for Control" section under each pest in "BUG-U" for steps you should take to prevent pests from entering or nesting in your home.
  5. Monitor and Evaluate:
Observe what actions you have taken produce the desired results. If your short-term actions were effective (applying pesticides) you can focus on long term solutions like replacing torn screens or filling in cracks in the foundation. Evaluate what actions you have taken worked and what you might need to modify.

Pesticide Safety
Keep the following in mind when using pesticides:

  1. Read the label:
safe pesticide use begins with reading the label
  2. Note "signal" words:
Signal words will usually be in capital letters on the front of the pesticide. Use CAUTION products whenever possible and avoid the more hazardous WARNING and DANGER products
  3. Don't stockpile pesticides:
Buy only the amount of pesticide you will need for your problem or season
  4. Wear protective clothing and equipment:
You must wear whatever equipment is advised on the label. Never wear leather, when applying pesticides, as it is very absorbent.
  5. Mix pesticides carefully - if appropriate:
Always follow the directions on the label
  6. Apply pesticides safely:
Do not eat or drink while applying pesticides, shower immediately after applying, use pesticides only in places where stated on the label, never use outdoor insecticides inside. Always KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN!
  7. Storage and Disposal:
Always store in a locked place, not accessible to children. When you have used all of a product, dispose of it as per the label instructions
