There are about 2,500 different species of spiders in North America and they can be found on the highest mountain peaks as well as your own basement. Spiders vary widely in size, color, shape and habits. All spiders have 2 major body regions and four pair of legs. They also carry venom to immobilize their prey yet very few are dangerous to humans. Spiders are considered beneficial because they consume large numbers of insect and are not known as disease carriers.

Common Household Spiders
Wolf spiders are commonly found in the household and are dark brown. They actively hunt prey and do not use webs or snares. Female Wolf spiders have bodies up to1 ½ inches long. Wolf spiders are covered with short hair in shades of brown, black, gray, white, yellow or green.

Jumping spiders are another common household spider and depend on their vision and leaping ability to capture their prey. They are generally ½ inch long or less and are gray, brown, or black with red, orange or white markings.

Cobweb spiders build irregular cobwebs inside and outside and like to hang upside down in them. This household spider tends to build its webs in the corners of room or the angles of windows. The Black Widow is a member of this group which, uses a row of small bristles on its hind legs to help wrap the spiders prey in silk.

Brown spiders, also known as recluse spiders, are the best-known and most notorious members of this family. The spiders have only 6 eyes and a violin-shaped pattern on the back of the front body segment. They weave an irregular sheet like web in sheltered locations in basements, closets and storage areas. The bite of the Brown Recluse spider is extremely serious and direct contact should be avoided.
