Paper wasps, hornets and yellow jackets are a potential threat, as hundreds of people die each year from a severe allergic reaction to the venom from these insects. Nests should be removed with great care and in a specific manner, as wasps will defend their nests with a painful sting.
Appearance
Yellow Jackets are often confused with honeybees, as they are commonly banded yellow or orange and black. Yellow Jackets usually nest underground but occasionally can be found in crawl spaces or wall voids.
Hornets produce large gray inverted teardrop shaped nests under the eaves of homes, in trees or shrubs. Hornet nests can contain thousands of wasps, which are extremely aggressive when disturbed. Bald-faced hornets have a stout black body and bright yellow markings with white markings on the face. Sandhills hornets also have a black body with yellow markings and are often confused with yellow jackets.
Paper Wasps make paper nests with open cell construction commonly under the eaves of buildings. Paper wasps are slender and reddish-brown in color marked with yellow rings. Mud Dauber wasps are larger, long cylindrical shaped with black body with a large yellow area. These wasps usually form nests in the ground, under rocks and under roofs, forming nests by constructing mud cells.
Treatment
Use Pro ExterminatorTM Wasp, Hornet and Yellow Jacket Killer is specifically formulated with two active ingredients; one, to kill the entire nest on contact and another, to kill insects as they return to the nest. Pro ExterminatorTM jet stream will reach nests up to 20 feet above the ground and is electrically non-conducting (47,300 Volt dielectric strength).
Do
Spray in the early morning or late evening when insect activity is minimal.
Remove the nest in the early spring or late fall if at all possible
Stand a safe distance away from the nest and not under it
Hold can upright and point spray toward the opening in the nest with the wind at your back
Spray until the nest is thoroughly saturated to kill the entire nest population (Residual action will kill insects returning to the nest)
Wait 24 hours before removing the nest.
Keep Out Of Reach Of Children
Read "Directions for Use" and "Precautionary Statements" on the container before using!
Do Not
Shine a flashlight directly on the nest as this will attract and anger the insects
Attempt to remove a nest during the day when the insects are most active
Attempt to remove a nest unless you are positive that no severe allergic reaction will result from a sting
Preventing and Controlling Wasps, Hornets and Yellow Jackets
Avoid leaving food or drink uncovered when eating outside
Avoid wearing scented products or hairspray while outside
Keep garbage in sealed containers
If wasps land on you, remain calm and wait for them to fly off or brush them away very gently
To prevent entrance of insects into the house, spray points where insects enter such as outside plumbing, faucets etc. and cracks or crevices in foundation as well as along sills and ledges.
While outside, wear light colored clothing, even hair covering if possible
